About online training

Our 'Online Training System' allows you to fully engage in online learning in an effective and simple manner. Never before has online training been so accessible!

How to sign up

1. To get started navigate to our Online Training System login page where you can "Sign up" and create your own account. Once you have signed up, your account details will be emailed to you.

2. Using the details you are provided in the email you receive you can login and view the "Available Courses". From here you can view the course outline and apply for courses.
(Currently the only online course is Contractor Management however with time more courses will become available online.)

3. Applying for a course is quiet easy. When viewing "Available Courses" you can click the "Apply", you will then be guided through to various pages request your confirmation and providing you with payment details

4. Once your payment has been received our staff will approve your account and you are ready to get started

Who is the course aimed at?

This course is aimed at assisting contractors and principals in the Coal and Extractive industries to meet their OH&S and Legal obligations. The content of this course was developed in association with the NSW Minerals Council, The Coal Services Health and Safety Trust, Extractive industries Association and The University of Newcastle.

If you find it difficult to get the time to attend in person sessions, or you are in a very remote area and distance is an issue for you, this course is aimed at you. The content is well set out making this course a very simple and effective means of ensuring you are meeting your requirements.

What are the outcomes of this course?

The overall goal of this course is to improve your health and safety performance, therefore assisting you to operate safer and meet important legal obligations. By achieving this we aim to improve industry safety and stop people getting hurt, which results in a safer work place for us all.

This course is not designed to build a safety management plan for you, it is designed to give you the information, processes to follow and documentation (developed by the NSW minerals council) to develop your own safety management plan using the tools and knowledge obtained from Jim and Grahams extensive experience.

Regardless of if you are a large organisation, small company or member of the public you are able to do this course. When applying for tenders you are required to show you have met a standard in terms of OH&S, this course will assist you to prove you are meeting that required standard.

The course content and requirements for contractors are nationally consistent; contractors are contractors regardless of if they are in NSW, QLD, NT or any other state or territory in Australia. Therefore it doesn’t matter what state you are operating in, the content of this course still applies and it will improve your health and safety performance and ensure you are meeting the required legal standards.

How does it work?

The course is delivered online (or by CD, included free of charge) via 8 approximately 30 minute audio visual sessions spoken by Jim Knowles and Graham Terry.

At the end of each audio visual session you are to take a quiz based on the content of the previous session. The questions are not hard, but they do require you listen attentively and you may find it easier if you take notes during the sessions.

You are able to ask questions in online forums in order to obtain assistance with any information you may need clarified, you can contact the session instructors by email and we have a technical support line for any situations where you encounter difficulties using the system.

What do you get out of this course?

You will receive a certificate of completion which you can include in any tenders you apply for.

You will be able to develop a very comprehensive and effective contractor management plan using the knowledge you have obtained and the documentation that we have used as examples.

Both of these will assist you in keeping your work place as safe as possible and will benefit you when it comes to applying for tenders. When applying for tenders you are required to show you have met a certain standard in terms of OH&S and legal obligations, having done this course assists in displaying that you have met these requirements and having your own contractor management plan will provide evidence that you have met what is required.

Cost to carry out the course?

The cost to do this course is $200.00 + GST.

As the minerals council handbook is used as a reference guide through the whole course it is required that you download it and read it off your computer screen, download and print the document or purchase a copy. If you contact us we can supply a copy of this handbook at our printing + postage cost which is $30.00 Australia wide.

Did you know?

From 1 July 2007 all contractors in NSW are required by law to have a Contractor Safety and Health Management program. It will also be a requirement from all of the major mining companies that contractors health and safety programs meet an acceptable standard.

As a result of this the Jim Knowles Group and Mine Resilience Australia P/L have developed the content th May of a on-line training course with the support of the NSW Minerals Council, Coal Services Health and Safety Trust, Australian Institute of Quarrying Education Foundation and the University of Newcastle.

Major mining companies in Australia including Centennial, Xstrata, Anglo, BHP, Hansons and Rocla have given their support to this project.
