Over the past few years, the developers had observed that many large companies chose to implement complex audit/assessment systems - often from overseas - to drive their OHS performance. In many cases these make only passing reference to local conditions or needs and do not place sufficient emphasis on the need to involve people at the ‘shop floor’ or ‘coal face’. Their effectiveness relies on a significant investment of money, time and resources, which are not available to smaller organisations.

What is STAR Check?

STAR Check is a new product developed by a young and progressive Australian company to cater to the needs of medium and smaller businesses. It is a comprehensive task assessment tool that assesses compliance with an organisation’s OHS management systems.

By design STAR Check ensures that assessment of tasks is performed in a consistent and comprehensive manner so that all key aspects of a task are assessed for compliance.

STAR Check delivers by:

  • Having trained assessors applying an effective task assessment tool
  • Rectifying non-compliances on the job in a non-threatening way
  • Improving OHS standards by raising workers’ awareness of issues and allowing them to ‘learn by doing’

In addition to the correction of non-compliances and reinforcement of good work practices, STAR Check utilises a web-based database to provide trend analysis capability and a lasting electronic record of assessments.

Managers, supervisors and workers find it easy to implement the new system as they can see the immediate benefits of a safer workplace and longer-term advantages of improving performance, reducing injury rates and improving workplace culture.
